OET candidates do everything they can to prepare—book flights, arrange transport, take time off work, and manage tight schedules.
However, unexpected incidents can still occur. This article shares an important case that OET test takers should be aware of before test day.
An Incident: No Staff Appearing at the Test Venue
A recent OET candidate studying with us at OET Bank was scheduled to take the test in Sydney.
However, the staff member responsible for running the exam never appeared, and the entire test session was cancelled on the spot.
This was not the first time such an issue has been reported.
In the past, some candidates have also experienced situations where the online speaking examiner did not show up, resulting in delays or test cancellations.
While rare, these disruptions do happen. IMGs planning to sit the OET—especially those traveling long distances—should keep this in mind.
Many Candidates Simply Give Up — But You Shouldn’t
In cases like this, many candidates—especially those unfamiliar with international testing procedures—tend to give up without taking action.
But you do not need to accept the loss.
If an error on OET’s side causes your test to be cancelled or disrupted, you can request support through OET Customer Service.
In nearly all cases, candidates are issued a free replacement test voucher once the issue is confirmed.
The key is to stay calm and contact OET formally.

Important Note for Computer-Based Exams
If you are taking the computer version of the exam and your Speaking test comes before RLW, please remember the rule:
You must take Reading, Listening, and Writing within 8 days of your Speaking test.
Otherwise, all test results become invalid.
This makes rescheduling extremely difficult, especially for IMGs who are working full-time or have limited availability.
Therefore, if an issue occurs—such as a missing staff member—contact OET immediately.
Financial & Emotional Impact: A Real Concern for IMGs
Some candidates travel by plane or high-speed rail to reach their test center.
When a session is cancelled without notice, the emotional and financial burden can be significant.
At this time, there are no known reports of OET reimbursing travel expenses.
Venues in Japan rarely face such problems because they also operate other large-scale tests.
However, OET is a global exam delivered through various providers, meaning such incidents can occur.
Keeping this possibility in mind helps you respond calmly on the day.
If you’re preparing for OET, consider exploring our practice resources at OET Bank.
We’re designed not just as mock tests, but as powerful review tools that make it easier to analyze weaknesses and focus on what’s needed to pass.
